Guy at the lumber yard on Georgia St called my deck ledger "a water trap," and I had to tear it off
I built a ledger board flush against the siding on my back porch in Amarillo 5 months back and figured I was done. When I went in for more joist hangers, an old carpenter behind the counter asked how I flashed it, and when I said I just caulked the top edge he flat out said that would trap water and rot the rim board within a couple winters. I pulled the whole thing off, added a 3 inch gap, and ran Z flashing under the siding with a bead of sealant on top the way he described. My question is, how much gap do you all leave at the bottom of the flashing so it can still drain? I want to make sure I did not just trade one trap for another.
