Just realized we have been sealing our driveway wrong for 10 years

I read the label on a can of Black Jack sealer last week and it said you need to water it down 3 to 1 for the first coat, which explains why our last two driveways peeled up within 6 months here in Amarillo.

Gotta water those first coats down for real... learned that lesson the hard way myself after watching a whole driveway bubble up in the Texas sun. Black Jack is pretty specific about mixing ratios and a lot of folks skip the fine print. Once you do it right though, that stuff holds up way better against the heat and the freeze-thaw cycles we get here.

Three years back I watched my neighbor in San Antonio do the same thing with his whole patio. He watered down that first coat like a pro, then just poured the second coat straight out of the can without mixing it up at all. Two weeks later it looked like a moonscape with all those bubbles. It's funny how that applies to so many things in life though, not just driveway sealant. People rush through the setup steps because they want the quick result, then end up spending twice as long fixing the mess they made. I've seen it happen with painting rooms, cooking complicated recipes, even assembling furniture from IKEA. The universe really does punish you for skipping the boring parts.

Has anyone tried doing a second thin coat in the opposite direction from the first? @jamieb80 I found that helps lock the sealant into the little cracks better, especially on older asphalt that's already got some wear. Most people just pour and spread one way, then call it done. But crossing the pattern on that second coat spreads it more even across the surface. I backrolled mine with a broom handle after each coat to push the sealant deep into the open pores. That stopped the bubbling issue for me entirely, even in that brutal summer heat we get down here.

Funny you mention that, I had a buddy over in Lubbock who did the exact same thing with his driveway. He was so proud of how it looked after the first coat, went back and sealed it right. Then that west Texas heat hit and it all just bubbled up like pancakes on a griddle. He was furious until someone pointed out the mixing directions on the can. He had to scrape the whole thing off with a pressure washer and start over. Took him a whole weekend and he swears he'll never skip reading the fine print again. Did you have to strip yours back down or just layer over the mess?
