Knee pain from a weekend tile job is wrecking my sleep

Laid tile in my bathroom all weekend and now my knees are constantly sore. Kept waking up last night from the ache, which is just great.

Yeah that "waking up from the ache" is the worst part. It's not just sore during the day, it fully invades your time to recover. You'll shift in your sleep and a sharp pain shoots through your knee, or you wake up on your side and realize the pressure is making it throb. Even the weight of the sheets can feel like too much. Your body just won't let you escape it.

My friend dealt with that same relentless knee pain keeping him up all night. He'd finally doze off and then jerk awake from just shifting under the covers. Like @graceowens described, there was zero escape, even the mattress pressure set it off. He tried stacking pillows around his leg but still woke up sore every morning. It got to the point where he was drinking coffee at 3 a.m. because sleep was hopeless. The guy looked like a zombie until he finally saw a doctor about it.

So what did the doctor end up telling him was the actual cause? Was it something like arthritis or a torn meniscus, or just a really bad case of inflammation?
