Rant: Everyone says to insulate your attic first but I disagree
I used to spend $800 a year trying to seal every crack in my Amarillo house before I realized the real heat loss was through my uninsulated garage door. Swapped to a foam core door last spring and my heating bill dropped by half compared to all that caulking work. Anyone else find a different weak spot that saved them more than attic insulation?

What kind of basement windows were they, the old crank-out style or just the sliding aluminum ones?

Oh man, I feel this... we had the same problem living in a ranch style house. Turned out our old single-pane basement windows were basically open holes. Swapped them for double panes and it made a way bigger difference than all that attic fuss.

Right? Same boat here. My old basement windows were the sliding aluminum ones, total junk. @king.eric if you're dealing with those, just replace them. I could feel a draft from ten feet away. The attic insulation barely touched our cold floors. New double panes changed everything. It's like the house finally sealed up tight.
