Rant: I tried patching my garage drywall with a pre-mix bucket versus mixing my own mud from powder.

The powder mix from the hardware store set up way faster and sanded smoother for my Amarillo house, so now I'm never going back to that ready-made stuff, has anyone else found that?

Oh man, same thing happened with tile adhesive. The pre-mixed stuff never cured right in my bathroom. Switched to powder and it was a total game changer.

My first bathroom reno I used that pre-mixed mastic on twelve square feet of subway tile. Woke up the next day and could still slide the tiles around with my thumb. Felt like I'd used toothpaste. Had to chip it all out and start over, what a mess. Powder mix is the only way I'll go now, it actually gets hard.

How much time did you waste before you figured it out? That pre-mixed mud always stays a little soft and gums up the sandpaper. I had the exact same fight trying to fix a ceiling. The powder mix dries hard and sands to dust, which is what you actually want. It's just better.
