That week I replaced all my own PVC plumbing under the slab
Three days of jackhammering concrete in my Amarillo garage to fix a busted pipe, saved me $1,800 but my back still hurts a month later. Anyone else take on a slab leak and regret not just calling a pro?

Different strokes I guess. That $1,800 is a nice chunk of change sitting in your pocket, not some plumber's wallet.

Oh shoot, @ray_williams I get what you're saying but that number's a bit off. A lot of plumbers in my area charge around $100-$150 just for the service call, then $75-$125 an hour after that. So that $1,800 would probably cover maybe 10 hours tops before parts and markup. My buddy runs a shop and says their average invoice for a full water heater swap is like $900-$1500 with parts, so $1,800 isn't really what most of them take home after overhead eats into it. Just saying the pocket money math might not add up how you think.

Ask how your buddy's shop keeps their prices low enough that $900-$1500 covers a water heater swap? I feel like most horror stories I hear involve people getting hit with surprise fees or upcharges on parts.
