Why does nobody talk about how much better modern paint primer is?

I was repainting a bedroom in my old house near Wolflin last year and the new color just would not stick right over the old dark blue. My dad came by, saw me doing a third coat, and said 'kid, you're still using that water based junk from 2005, aren't you?' He handed me a can of the new shellac based stuff. One coat later and it was perfect. Has anyone else in Amarillo found a tool or product that changed a job you thought you knew?

My buddy over on Olsen was fighting his old deck stain for weeks. He kept sanding and re-applying, but it would peel by summer. Some guy at the hardware store finally asked him if he was using a wood brightener first. Total game changer, he said it was like the wood was thirsty for the new stain after that. He swears by the stuff now.

My neighbor on Maple did the same thing... went through three gallons of stain before someone told him about oxalic acid cleaner.

Oh man, I feel that. I once spent a whole weekend trying to stain a fence that just would not take it. I was out there with a brush, getting more and more mad, watching the stain just sit on top like water on a waxed car. I looked like a total fool, and my wife still brings it up. Turns out the old gray wood needed a cleaner first, but I was too stubborn to ask for help.
