Why does nobody talk about which direction to run hardwood flooring planks?

I spent 3 years laying all my floors parallel to the longest wall because every tutorial said that. Then a contractor friend pointed out my narrow hallway looks like a bowling alley because of it. Has anyone else realized they were flooring all wrong after a simple tip?

Whoa, I actually used to think running planks parallel to the longest wall was the only way to go too. But then I helped a buddy with his living room and we ran them perpendicular to the main window and it totally opened up the space. It made me realize the hallway thing you're talking about is real, now I always check sight lines first before deciding.

Yeah man @james_bell nailed it with that sight line tip. I did the same thing in my last place, ran em perpendicular to the big window in the living room and it made the whole room feel way bigger. Definitely changed how I look at layout planning now, always check the light and entry points first.

Funny timing on this, I actually read an article by some flooring guys that said the whole "parallel to the longest wall" thing is outdated advice. They mentioned what someone else said here about light from windows and how your eye naturally follows the seams, so you want to guide people through the space not down a tunnel. Always thought it was weird nobody fact checks this stuff, like how many houses have floors that look off just because some random tutorial got repeated for years.
