A photographer friend in Portland said my AI art was just 'fancy collage'

He argued it wasn't creative because the AI just mixes existing images without intent. I started writing detailed prompts about mood and story, not just looks. Has anyone else shifted their process after getting real criticism on what makes art?

Portland photographers can be so stuck in their old ways. Honestly, the intent is in writing the prompt and guiding the output. Calling it just a collage totally misses the point of the work.

Ugh, this happens with every new tool. People get stuck on the old way of doing things and miss the actual skill involved now. It's like saying driving a car is just "pointing it" because you didn't build the engine. Or that using a word processor is just "typing" because you didn't invent the alphabet. The craft shifts, but that doesn't make it less real.

Honestly, I used to be right there with the Portland crowd on this. I thought it was just fancy clip art. But then I tried making some myself. The amount of back and forth, tweaking tiny details in the prompt over and over, it's a real process. It's less like pasting pictures together and more like trying to give exact directions to a painter who can't see what you're seeing. Getting one good image can take hours of those small changes.
