Appreciation post: That one random comment that made me rethink AI art entirely

I was at a local coffee shop in Portland last month and this older guy saw me working on an AI-generated piece on my laptop. He just said 'so you push a button and call it yours?' and I got defensive at first. But then he asked me to explain my process, so I walked him through the 40 different prompts and layering I did. He nodded and said 'huh, so you're like a composer who picks the instruments, not the player.' That really stuck with me, because it made me realize the debate isn't about if AI is creative, but about where the work actually happens. Has anyone else had a random conversation that totally flipped your perspective on this whole thing?

The composer thing hits hard because its exactly how I explain it to my guys when they give me shit about using AI for my side projects. You gotta think of it like this - a composer doesnt build the violin, they just know what notes to put together and when. Same deal with AI art. The real work is in the thousands of tiny decisions you make, the redoing, the filtering through garbage to find the one good output. I tell people to keep a notebook of prompts that worked and ones that bombed, treat it like a recipe book for flavors you wanna combine. The tool doesnt make the artist, the choices do.

I read something the other day that said the real skill in AI art is knowing what you want, not how to make it. That old guy's composer analogy actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it. It kinda reframes the whole thing from "is this cheating" to "where does the vision come from.
