Had to pick between my own drawing and an AI version for a client logo, and I still feel weird about it
Last week a guy in Sacramento who runs a small coffee cart asked me to design his logo, and I spent about 6 hours on a hand drawn cup with steam that I was pretty proud of. Then on a whim I typed the same idea into an AI tool and it spat out 4 versions in like 20 seconds, and honestly one of them looked cleaner than mine. I showed him both and he picked the AI one because it was "smoother," and I got paid either way but it stung a little. Tbh I don't know if I was mad at the tool or at myself for even showing him the second option. Has anyone else been in that spot where the client picks the machine version over your actual work?
The real problem is you showed him both. A coffee cart guy in Sacramento does not have a trained eye for line work, he just knows smooth looks nice on a cup. The second you put that AI option on the table, the choice stopped being about your drawing and started being a Pepsi Challenge he never asked for. Next time hand over one design and one only, because clients pick from what you give them, not from what you think is fair.
