Spent 6 hours trying to get an AI to draw a simple hand with 5 fingers

I was making a comic and needed a character holding a coffee cup. Figured I'd save time with Midjourney. After 4 different prompts and 50+ generations, every single hand looked like a horror movie mutation. 4 fingers, 6 fingers, fingers where the thumb should be. Ended up drawing it myself in 10 minutes. Has anyone else hit this wall where the AI just can't do human anatomy no matter how specific you get?

Actually I disagree, the hand issue is a known limitation and not a wall you can talk your way around.

In your experience, did adding negative prompts like "no mutated hands" or describing "pinky, ring, middle, index, thumb" explicitly make any difference, or did it still spit out the same uncanny stuff?

My friend Jenna tried to make a portrait for her D&D character's token using Stable Diffusion. She spent an entire afternoon fighting with prompts like "natural five-fingered left hand" and "anatomically correct palms". The AI kept giving her hands that looked like fleshy starfish or fingers that bent the wrong way at the knuckle. She got so frustrated she just traced a hand from a photo and pasted it on top of the AI generated body. It's like the AI has seen pictures of hands but never actually learned what a hand is supposed to look like. The weird part was the hands looked good from far away but zooming in was pure nightmare fuel.
