That moment I realized my AI generations were just copying my favorite artists' styles without adding anything new
Last month a friend pointed out my 50th prompt output of a 'cyberpunk samurai in a neon alley' looked exactly like three other pieces on ArtStation, and it hit me that I'd been using AI like a lazy photocopier instead of actually trying to build my own visual language, has anyone else had that wake-up call where you realize you're just remixing other people's signatures?

Has anyone else tried making yourself use only one specific tool or brush for like a week? lol I got stuck in the same rut copying artists I admired and it sucked the fun right out of it. What helped me was forcing myself to start with just primitive shapes and a simple color palette before touching any references or famous workflows. Honestly my early stuff looked like garbage but after a month I started seeing little bits of my own taste come through. It feels way more rewarding even if the results aren't as polished at first.

Wait, has anyone actually tried feeding their AI only their own previous non-AI work to see what happens? Like old sketches, photos you took, stuff you made with your hands before AI? I did this on a whim last week and it was wild because the outputs came out looking nothing like the popular ArtStation styles everyone's been copying. It was kinda ugly and rough but it had this consistent weirdness that felt like mine. The hardest part was realizing I barely had enough of my own material to train on because I spent years just consuming other people's art instead of making my own. Now I'm honestly thinking the real trap isn't that AI copies artists, its that we never built our own visual vocabulary in the first place so we have nothing to draw from.
