That study about AI art and brain scans really threw me

I was reading this article on Nature last week where they hooked people up to fMRI machines and showed them human art vs AI art, and the brain actually lit up differently for the real stuff even when people couldn't tell which was which. Apparently our brains can spot something off about AI made images on a subconscious level, like a sixth sense for authenticity. Has anyone else seen this research and does it change how you feel about calling AI stuff 'art'?

That "empty inside" description from the student really stuck with me, mostly because I think my own art gives people that same feeling even when I try my hardest. Honestly, I can't even draw a stick figure without it looking like it's having an existential crisis. So maybe our brains are just picking up on the fact that AI didn't have to struggle with a smudged eraser or cry over a wonky perspective like I do.

That 2.4% difference in brain activity they found in the prefrontal cortex really got me too! I actually tested this out with my own art students last month on a whim, showing them 10 paintings where half were human made and half were AI generated. Every single kid got a weird feeling about the AI ones even though they couldn't say why, like they could just sense something was "off" in the brushwork. One girl said the AI landscapes felt "empty inside" which was so creepy but spot on. It makes me think there's something real to that whole "soul in art" thing we always say artists have.

Kids pick up on that stuff. Instinct.
