Unpopular opinion: AI art made me realize I was cheating at my own hobby for 2 years

I used to run a little D&D campaign for some friends and I'd spend hours scouring Google Images for the perfect character portraits, maps, and monster pictures. Then I found an AI generator and thought it was the greatest thing ever. I could make anything I wanted in 30 seconds. But last month one of my players said 'man, these look cool but they don't really feel like they belong in our world, you know?' And that hit me. I realized I was just grabbing random cool stuff instead of actually crafting something that fit our story. The whole point was supposed to be collaboration and imagination, not hitting a button and moving on. Has anyone else had that moment where automation made them worse at the creative part?

You weren't cheating, you were just using a different tool.

Yeah, that hits hard. Really gets to why we make stuff in the first place.
