The hiring bot at my old company quietly rejected me 3 years ago and I just found out the reason
I need to get this off my chest because it's been eating at me since Tuesday. About 3 years back I applied for a data analyst job at a logistics company in Columbus, Ohio, and I got the standard "we went with other candidates" email after 11 days. Fast forward to two weeks ago, a former coworker of mine who still works there mentioned over coffee that their old resume screening tool had a known bug where it downranked anyone whose resume listed a degree year more than 8 years old. Mine was from 2011. She said HR found out about it in an internal audit and quietly switched vendors in early 2022, but nobody ever went back and told the people who got filtered out. So a machine made a call about my life and there's no appeal, no letter, no nothing, just a silent no. I'm not saying the tool was evil but I am saying nobody owned the mistake, and that scares me more than the bug itself. How are companies supposed to fix this stuff when the people who got hurt never even learn it happened?
My buddy went through something close to this at a bank in Toledo. He got turned down for a teller supervisor spot, and two years later a guy on the inside told him the system had flagged his address because it was in the same zip code as a closed branch, like that had anything to do with him. He never got a call or a letter either, just found out over beers one night. The part that got me was he'd been beating himself up for months thinking he bombed the interview.
