The moment I realized my "ethical AI" checklist was just performative

Last month at a meetup in Austin, a guy asked me flat out "who actually benefits from your model?" and I froze. I had all these governance policies, transparency docs, bias audits... but my chatbot was still being trained on data scraped from Reddit without anyone's permission. That question made me see I was just checking boxes for my own comfort, not for real accountability. Anyone else ever catch themselves doing the ethics theater instead of the hard work?

Three reddit datasets later and I'm still waiting for one of those "ethically sourced" posts to actually ask me for consent instead of just hoping I didn't notice. Feels like we're all just building chatbots on other people's old arguments and calling it accountability.

Isn't that question the one we all secretly hope nobody asks? I had a similar wake-up call when a developer on my team pointed out our "inclusive dataset" was mostly English, middle-class forum posts, and I realized my pride in our fairness tools was mostly hiding the fact we'd skipped the actual hard conversations. It's tough to admit you've been putting a fresh coat of paint on a house with no foundation.
