Update: I found a box of my old college notebooks from 2005, and my notes on 'machine ethics' were just a single paragraph.
That week in 2023 when my city's hiring algorithm got scrapped for bias was the first time I saw my old professor's vague warning about 'coded values' play out in a real, messy way that cost people jobs.

Maybe we were right to treat it like sci-fi back then. The tech just wasn't there to make those ethics questions feel real yet. It's easier to see the problems clearly once the thing actually exists and messes up.

Wait, your notes were just one paragraph? That's wild. We spent a whole semester on that stuff. It's crazy how we all just shrugged it off back then like it was some far off sci-fi problem. And now it's just out there breaking things for real people. That professor tried to tell us.

Honestly my notes were basically a doodle of a robot with a frowny face. It's wild how something can feel like a joke until it's suddenly not, you know? Guess that professor was onto something after all.
