A guy at a tech meetup in Denver said AI art is just copying

We were talking about new image generators at a meetup last month. This guy, a graphic designer, said all AI does is 'stitch together stolen work' and that's it. He was really firm about it. I told him about the new models that learn concepts, not just copy pixels, but he wouldn't hear it. Anyone else run into people who just shut down the conversation like that?

Hate when people get stuck on that idea. It's more like learning how things look and then making new combos, not just pasting pieces together. Feels like he just heard the "stolen art" talking point and stopped there.

Ever notice how some people hear one scary phrase and their brain just shuts off? Like they think AI is over there with scissors and a glue stick cutting up pictures. It's not a collage project from third grade, it's spotting patterns. But sure, let's all panic about the robot that makes weird three-handed people.

Totally agree with @lily57, read a whole paper on how it learns patterns.
