I finally saw the AI shift in my own job at the local library
We used to spend hours manually sorting and cataloging new arrivals, but now a system does it in minutes. It freed up my time for community programs, but they cut two part-time positions to pay for it. Do you think this kind of trade-off is the new normal for most fields?

It's the same story at the grocery store with self-checkout lanes.

Ever try the cashier line instead?

I was reading this article the other day about how stores are basically using self checkouts to replace human workers, and it's not even about speed. The whole point is they can run fewer cashiers and make customers do the work instead. But then you stand there for ten minutes because the machine freezes up or doesn't recognize some random vegetable you bought. My neighbor said she spent fifteen minutes trying to check out a bag of apples because the scale kept saying the weight was wrong. It's like they designed these things to be just barely usable enough that people won't revolt, but not good enough to actually be helpful.
