PSA: I had to pick between learning Python or sticking with my old Excel sheets for work reports

My boss in Austin gave me a choice last month: either start using an AI tool for our weekly sales data, or keep doing it manually (which took about 8 hours). I chose to learn the basics of Python to run the AI script myself. It was rough for two weeks, but now the report takes 20 minutes. Has anyone else switched to a new skill for an AI task at their job?

Sounds like your boss did you a favor, honestly.

Read an article about this last week. It argued that calling it a favor ignores the real stress of losing your income. The system is broken if it treats people as disposable like that.

Look at it this way, maybe the boss just sped up the inevitable. If a task can be automated that easily, it probably wasn't a long-term job anyway. Calling it a favor feels like a stretch though, getting pushed out still hurts. The real problem is when there's no plan for what people do next.

But that's just automating yourself out of a job.
