Warning: I spent 8 months blaming the young hires for our turnover until I checked the actual exit notes
I manage 40 rental units and we went through 5 leasing agents in 8 months, and I was sure the new folks just had no work ethic. Then in January my regional guy asked me to pull the exit interview notes from our HR folder, and 4 of the 5 had written nearly the same thing: they quit because the training was a 2 hour video from 2019 and nobody showed them how to handle a late fee dispute. I sat at my desk in the Boise office feeling like a total idiot. I had been telling myself the whole time that the market was just rough on young workers, and meanwhile I never once walked a new hire through the actual system. What tipped me off was one girl's note that said, and I quote, "I asked 3 times how the portal worked and got a shrug." So now I'm building a real 3 day onboarding instead of handing people a login and wishing them luck. Anyone else found out the hard way that a staffing problem was actually a training problem? And has anyone tried using any of these AI training tools for new hires, because I'm skeptical but curious.
