Update: Was using WAY too much oil in my air fryer

Cooked wings for 3 years coating them in oil. Thought that's how you get crispy skin. Then my buddy brought his over last month and his wings were way crunchier with half the oil. He said I was basically steaming them. Tried it his way with just a light spray and got perfect results first try. Anyone else overcook their oil usage at first?

Nah, I'm gonna push back on this. I still coat my wings in oil and they come out perfect every time. You need that fat to render the skin properly, a light spray just dries them out.

The "rendering the skin" part is key, that's exactly what people miss when they just spray.

Wait, wait, you still use full on liquid oil? Like, you're actually pouring it on and tossing them around in a bowl before baking? I thought we were all using spray bottles by now, that's wild to me. My whole kitchen gets splattered if I try that method, plus I swear the extra oil just pools at the bottom of the pan and makes them soggy on one side. I switched to just a light spritz of avocado oil a couple years ago and they get super crispy, but maybe I'm missing something with the texture you're describing.
