Appreciation post: an old timer at my hangar taught me more about torque in 10 minutes than 2 years of school did
Last Tuesday I was torquing a landing gear bolt and an old timer named Ray watched me for a minute, then asked if I was using the manual spec or the real spec. I said the manual, and he laughed and told me about a Cherokee he worked on back in 1989 where the book number kept loosening until he went 15 inch pounds over. He said "the book tells you where to start, not where to stop" and then walked me through checking the washer crush pattern on my next 3 bolts. It got me thinking about how much tribal knowledge we lose when guys retire. Any of you have a Ray who changed how you work?

Man, Ray sounds like every A&P I've ever met rolled into one guy with a coffee cup. The book tells you where to start, not where to stop is gonna live in my head rent free now.
