Borescope the turbine or just trust the trend? A 737 fan blade debate
Had a CFM56-7B with a slight vibration reading at Denver last month, oil samples looked fine but the trend data kept creeping up. I pulled the borescope and found a little nicking on the HPT blades that wasn't in the last report, but the senior guy says I wasted 2 hours and we should've just watched the trend for another cycle. Do you guys go in early when the numbers are borderline, or wait for a hard limit before you open things up, or is there a middle ground?
Oh man, I've been there! I had a similar call on an RB211 where the numbers were borderline and everyone said I was overthinking it. I popped the scope anyway and found a cracked vane, turned out it was a two day fix instead of a cheap line repair. Better to be the guy who looks silly for an hour than the guy explaining an engine out.
So what did the paperwork end up looking like for that scope? I’m curious if the logbook entry made you sound like a hero or if you had to fight to get the write-up signed off. Because I’ve seen borderline calls get buried by supe pressure, especially when the bird is due out.
