Found out the hard way that 'universal' parts aren't always universal
Spent three hours and about $40 on a 'universal' cowl pin for a Cessna 172, only to find it was about a quarter inch too short and the threads were wrong. The box said it fit, but it definitely did not. Anyone have a go-to brand for small hardware that doesn't lie?

Universal parts are the worst kind of gamble. Been there with a fuel cap that swore it was for my model. The box lies, the specs lie, and you're left holding junk. That wasted afternoon and the cash sting more than just paying for the real part up front. It's a lesson you only need to learn once.

I used to grab the cheapest universal parts I could find. That changed after a similar incident with a Piper Cherokee's door latch. Now I only order from the factory certified parts list, even if it costs more. The extra money is worth avoiding the wasted time and frustration.

Ever run into that with a generic oil filter? I had the same headache as @brianreed and just started calling my local shop for their stock numbers. It saves the guesswork and the returns.
