Old timer told me "you're not fixing it, you're just swapping parts"
Guy with 40 years on the line said that while watching me change a fuel control unit yesterday. Hit me hard because he's right. I've been swapping boxes instead of diagnosing - how do you train yourself to stop and dig deeper?

I don’t know, man. That whole “respect for the machine” thing sounds nice but it feels like a romantic way to look at swapping parts. Sometimes you just don’t have the time or the tools to dig three root causes deep on a shaky ladder with a flashlight in your teeth. If the fuel control unit is a known failure point and the swap fixes it nine times out of ten, you aren’t guessing, you’re playing the odds. The old timer probably earned his stripes guessing too, just with fewer parts in his hand.

Old timers aren't just talking about skill, they're talking about respect for the machine (and for your own brain). Diagnosis is like detective work, you gotta talk to the system, not just toss a new box at it and hope for the best. Try making a habit of writing down three possible root causes before you even touch a tool, and watch how fast you stop guessing.
