Quality inspector made me redo a torque check I'd already signed off on...
He watched me use the old calibrated wrench and said 'trust but verify' then made me pull out the digital one... turns out my old wrench was 18% off at 250 inch-lbs. I'd been torquing rudder cable turnbuckles wrong for months on this CRJ in Memphis. How often do you guys actually cross-check your older tools against a certified standard? I'm thinking of doing it every 60 days now, but that seems like overkill on the schedule.

The 18% drift is wild. That's not a small difference, that's a whole different torque spec on something that holds your rudder cables together. I check my dial calipers against a master gauge maybe once a month, but for wrenches I've only done it when something felt off. Though after reading this, I'm probably gonna add a quick check to my Monday routine, it takes like five minutes and saves you from exactly this kind of headache.

Man, that's the thing with precision tools, you never notice the slip until it bites you in the ass. Same deal with my kitchen scale, I trust it for months then one day it's off by 20 grams, so now I check it with a known weight every few weeks.
