My old boss in Tucson swore 22 gauge was fine for a 300 foot run, and he was dead wrong
Back around 2009 I worked for a small outfit in Tucson and the owner always ran 22 gauge wire on long perimeter loops to save a few bucks on the spools. I wired a 300 foot run through a warehouse that way and the keypad kept dropping zones whenever the AC kicked on, which got me two callbacks and a really unhappy customer. Swapped it all to 18 gauge and the problem went away for good, and I have refused to cut that corner ever since. Has anyone else run into voltage drop like that on a long loop, and what gauge do you keep on the truck for the big jobs?

Been there with a shop owner who thought he knew better than the math. Nothing worse than getting called back to a job you already finished because someone wanted to save ten bucks on wire. 18 gauge all day for anything over a hundred feet, learned that one the hard way too.
