Paid $250 for a cellular dialer that died in 5 months
Grabbed a budget cellular communicator for a residential install outside Denver, figured it would save the client money. It worked fine through testing, then the board fried during a summer storm and the panel never called out. Anyone else had luck with cheaper cellular backups, or should I just stick with the name brand modules?

Man, that hurts. Five months is brutal, especially when you think you're doing the client a solid. So here's the thing, did you catch the surge on the incoming phone line too, or was it just the board that took the hit? I've seen cheap dialers get killed by a strike on the neighbor's cable line, not even your own wiring. It makes me wonder if the price difference is really about the parts, or if the cheap ones just skip the surge protection entirely.
