TIL a customer in Austin had me pick between a wired and wireless sensor for their garage door.
They had a metal frame that messed with the wireless signal, so I went with the wired Honeywell 5800MINI and ran a 22/4 cable. It took an extra hour but the signal is rock solid now, no more false alarms. Anyone else run into this with older metal garage doors?

Oh man, that metal frame issue is no joke. I've seen it mess with car remotes too, people just can't figure out why their clicker stops working right at their own house. Good call running the wire.

Yeah, the car remote thing is spot on. My buddy had the same problem with his old metal garage door, his clicker would only work if he was standing outside the car. He ended up having to replace the whole opener unit because the wiring was a mess. Felt bad for him, it was a whole weekend project.

Read somewhere that iron and steel basically act like a shield for radio waves, which explains a lot about why old metal garages are such a pain. Makes you wonder how many people just assume their remote is broken when it's really the house fighting back.

Ever notice how metal just KILLS wireless signals, like ben_lewis said with his buddy's car remote?
