TIL that cleaning the contacts on a 15 year old panel can be the difference between a $500 service call and a 10 second fix
Got a call last Tuesday from a customer who said their system was randomly going off at 2 AM. Past three nights it happened. They were ready to gut the whole thing and pay for a full replacement. I showed up, popped the panel cover, and the battery terminals had that white crusty corrosion stuff (you know the stuff). Wiped it down with a wire brush, reconnected, and the system has been quiet ever since. Customer looked at me like I was a wizard. Has anyone else had a job where the obvious fix saved someone from spending big money?

Right? I had basically the same thing with a neighbor's thermostat. They were ready to drop a grand on a smart home setup and I just scraped the gunk off the old contacts with a butter knife. They still call me "the breaker whisperer.

You ever have one of those moments where you feel like a straight up magician for doing next to nothing? @beth276 I feel you on that "breaker whisperer" name, that's golden. I had a furnace once that was acting up, throwing error codes like crazy. Homeowner was convinced it was a dead control board, talking about hundreds of dollars and a week wait for a part. I took the cover off, found a spider web and a bunch of dust shorting out a sensor. Blasted it with compressed air, fired right up. Cost them nothing but a little bit of my time. Sometimes the simplest stuff looks like a big problem to people who don't live and breathe this stuff. It's a good feeling to save someone that headache and cash.

Man, nothing makes you feel more like a fraud than charging someone for what amounts to a solid cleaning and a confident look. I swear half my job is just knowing where to poke and what to ignore. At this rate my business card might as well say "gets lucky, but it works.
