Warning: My coworker is pushing for us to unionize, but management claims it'll cut jobs.

Better pay sounds great, but I'm worried about losing work if costs go up, so what's the right move here?

Has your management shown any actual data that jobs will be lost, or are they just making threats? I completely relate because my old job pulled the same stunt when union talks came up. They kept warning that prices would rise and roles would vanish, but it was all fear mongering. Once we formed a union, we secured a contract that not only raised wages but also blocked random layoffs. Having a union meant they couldn't cut jobs without a real reason, which made things more stable for everyone. What specifics has your coworker shared about how unionizing could actually protect your positions?

Exactly what proof did they give you about job losses? @sagecooper is right, they always pull that line. My coworker said a union contract can force them to show real cause for layoffs, not just cut people on a whim. It also makes them follow seniority rules so they can't just fire the newer workers to scare everyone else. Without a union, they can do whatever they want and you have no real way to fight it. Having that contract means they actually have to talk to you before making big changes.

What proof are they even offering for that job loss threat? That line is so tired. My buddy's warehouse job pulled the exact same garbage, and it was all just a scare tactic. Once they unionized, they got a contract that GUARANTEED layoff rules and actually saved a bunch of positions from being cut for no reason. Management always says costs will go up, but they never mention how a union stops them from just axing people on a whim to save a buck. Having that real contract is the only thing that makes them follow the rules.
