Warning: the $40 tone and probe kit I skipped is the reason I spent 3 hours in a crawlspace today
I was wiring a 12 zone panel in a house in Toledo and figured I could trace the old zone wires by hand like always. Two hours in, I had the wrong wire cut and a dead bedroom loop, so I ran out and grabbed the $40 tone and probe kit I kept putting off. Do you guys tone out every existing loop on a takeover job, or do you trust the labels the last guy left?
Read on a forum once that a guy on a takeover job spent a whole day ringing out every single loop before he touched anything. Said it felt slow at the time but he never once cut the wrong wire after that. The old labels are a coin flip, sometimes the last guy was sharp and sometimes he was guessing too. I started doing the same thing after wasting my own afternoon on bad labels. Ten minutes per loop beats crawling back under a house because some sharpie from 1998 lied to you. You toning every loop now or just the ones that look sketchy?
