Finally got my garage organized after 3 years in this house
I moved into my place in Airdrie back in 2021 and the garage was just a dumping ground for boxes and tools. Yesterday I spent 8 hours sorting everything into bins and putting up shelves from Costco. Has anyone else here tackled a garage that felt totally hopeless and actually got it done?

Bought a house a few years back where the previous owner left an old engine block on the floor, so I feel your pain on a whole other level. What is it about garages that just turn into black holes for junk?

Actually I kind of see it the opposite way. Garages are maybe the only room in a house that actually works how it's supposed to. You can throw old tires in there, stack boxes, park a car covered in sawdust, and it doesn't matter because nobody is eating dinner off the floor. That engine block is ugly but it's not hurting anything, it's just sitting there being a conversation starter. My garage has a half-finished go kart frame from 2018 and I honestly feel more at peace with that mess than I do with my tidy living room.

Gonna push back on this a little. I get the appeal of a "no rules" room but honestly that's the problem isn't it. Garages are supposed to be functional spaces but they become the place where ambition goes to die. That 2018 go kart frame isn't a conversation starter, it's a monument to a project you probably aren't finishing. A tidy living room at least reflects some sense of order and control. Your garage sounds like a physical to-do list that's been sitting there for years silently judging you every time you walk past it.
