Frozen pipe burst in my basement at 2am last night

Was up checking on my furnace in Calgary when I heard water dripping. Found a pipe in the corner by the foundation cracked and spraying all over my storage boxes. Turned off the main valve quick but the damage was already done, about 200 bucks worth of stuff ruined. Anyone else deal with sudden freeze ups in older homes and have tips for preventing it next time?

Did you try wrapping that corner pipe in heat tape? I read somewhere that insulating the side near the foundation can stop the freeze from getting to the pipe.

Not sure it's that big of a deal honestly. Most pipes will handle a little cold without all that fuss. Unless you're in a place where it drops below zero for days on end, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Tbh the real issue is old soldered joints that crack.
