Got told my 'landscaping' was just throwing grass seed on gravel

A neighbor walked by my house in Edmonton last spring and said my front yard looked like a construction site because I'd been dumping topsoil over clay without testing pH. So I spent $40 on a soil test kit and found out the pH was 8.2, way too alkaline for the Kentucky bluegrass I was planting. Has anyone else had a neighbor call them out on something that actually fixed their whole approach?

My dad's been gardening in Calgary for like 30 years and he always told me to throw a handful of lime in the soil before seeding, but I never listened lol. Last summer I did a soil test on my own lawn and it came back at 7.8 pH, so I dumped $30 worth of elemental sulfur on it and watered it in for a few weeks. The difference was crazy, the grass actually took off that fall compared to the patchy mess I had before. Your neighbor might have been a bit blunt but they honestly did you a favor saving you all that time and money on seed that would have just died anyway lol.

7.8 is brutal for grass. Elemental sulfur was the right call there. Calgary soil can be a real crapshoot.

Did @ryanm60 actually spend $30 just to lower his lawn's pH?
