My furnace filter trick saved me $200 this winter

I swapped my cheap fiberglass filter for a MERV 8 one back in November... my gas bill dropped from $340 to $140 by February. Has anyone else seen that big a change from just a filter swap?

Man, that's a solid drop. Happy for you, those bill surprises are the worst so it's nice to see someone come out ahead.

Oh wow, that's a heck of a difference. But here's my question - did you check your furnace's static pressure before and after? I swapped to a MERV 8 once and my blower motor started cycling on and off more because the filter was too restrictive for my older system. Just wondering if that fat drop in gas usage might come with a cost down the road, you know, like from the motor working harder.

Haha right? "Big savings but at what cost" - that's the HVAC motto I swear. I didn't check static pressure honestly, I just slapped the filter in and prayed. The whole thing feels like a gamble sometimes. My neighbor put a MERV 11 in his 20 year old unit and his blower sounded like a dying cat after a month. But hey, if my system explodes next winter at least I'll have saved 30 bucks on gas before it does. Tradeoffs, man.
