My garage door opener died last week and I'm stuck between a basic model or a smart one
Last week in Calgary, my old chain drive opener just quit. It was a basic unit from 2010. Now I'm looking at a new one. I can get a simple belt drive model for about $500 installed, which should be reliable. But a neighbor in Lethbridge told me his smart opener lets him check if it's closed from his phone, which costs about $300 more. I see the point for peace of mind, but I'm not sure I need another app on my phone. For those who have replaced theirs, is the smart feature worth the extra cash or just a hassle?

Honestly, go smart. That peace of mind is huge. I got one last year and checking my phone when I'm halfway to work is a lifesaver. The basic ones are fine, but you'll never miss a simple opener. You will absolutely have that one time you drive away unsure and it'll eat at you. The extra cost stings once, but the convenience is every single day.

Wait, you check your garage door from halfway to work? How far away is your job? Mine is like twenty minutes and I'd be turning around before I even thought to check my phone. That sounds stressful.

Which brand did you end up picking? I've been looking at them too and the app reviews are all over the place. Was it a pain to set up or pretty straightforward?
