Our main water line in Calgary froze solid last Tuesday morning
Woke up to no water and a cold house, which was a real shock. It happened after that sudden cold snap we had, the one that dropped to minus 30 overnight. I had to call an emergency plumber who used a big steam machine to thaw the pipe, and it cost me over $800. Has anyone else in an older neighborhood had this happen and found a good way to stop it for next winter?

Ouch, that's a brutal bill. My own home plumbing skills peak at knowing which way to turn the tap off. For what it's worth, my neighbor swears by those heat tape cables on his exposed line, wrapped in foam insulation after. He hasn't had a freeze since he put it in, even during that nasty snap. Might be worth a look before next winter hits.

Got a brand you'd trust for that heat tape?

My plumbing skills are so bad, I once tried to fix a leak with duct tape and hope. The heat tape idea sounds way smarter than my usual plan, which is just staring at the pipe until spring. Your neighbor is a genius, honestly. I might need to copy that move before my next water bill looks like a car payment.
