Shoutout to the old guy in Red Deer who caught my fence mistake from the alley
I was out back last Saturday trying to fix a sagging gate post on my fence and this guy walking his dog down the alley stopped and just watched me for a bit. He said, "You're gonna fight that post all summer if you don't set it below the frost line, about 4 feet down here." Turns out he'd built fences in Red Deer for 30 years and my post was only sunk 2 feet, which explains why it heaved after the last thaw. I dug it out and redid it his way and the gate lines up better than it has in ages, all for the cost of a bag of gravel. Anyway, it got me wondering how many of our fence and deck problems out here come down to posts that aren't deep enough for our winters. Anyone else learn that one the hard way?
