Update: the hail storm in Airdrie last June made me rethink my whole roof approach, now I can't decide who's right
So last June I watched that storm roll through Airdrie and dump golf ball sized hail on my place, and the next morning I had three neighbors on my driveway arguing about roofs. One guy swears by going with the cheapest shingles and just filing the insurance claim every time, says he's done it twice since 2020 and it works out fine. The other guy spent $9,000 extra on impact rated shingles and a better underlayment, and he says anyone who goes cheap is throwing money away. I'm stuck in the middle because my premium already went up $400 after the last claim, so part of me thinks better materials would save me the hassle, but the other part thinks insurance is paying either way so why spend my own cash. I also had a guy from a local roofing company out and he said the impact rated stuff only really helps if the rest of the roof system is up to par, which felt like a sales pitch but also kind of made sense. Curious what other folks around here actually did after that storm, did the upgrade pay off or did you just take the basic shingles and move on?
