Can we talk about the hiring algorithm that quietly penalized people with gaps in their work history?
I was reading a study summary from a group at Cornell last week and it said a resume screening tool knocked about 15 percent off the score of anyone with a gap longer than 6 months. The part that got me was the rule was never written down anywhere, it just got picked up from old hiring data and baked into the model. So a person who took time off to care for a sick parent could get ranked lower than a worse candidate with steady dates, and nobody would ever know why. How are you supposed to appeal a decision like that when the company itself probably can't explain it? I keep thinking about what a simple rule like 'ignore employment gaps' would fix overnight.
