Hot take: I hit 10,000 rejected loan applications and it changed my view on AI fairness

I do data entry for a small credit union and last week I crossed 10,000 applications that got flagged by our automated system. People keep saying these algorithms are biased against minorities, but from what I see, most rejections are for legit reasons like bad credit history or missing info. Out of those 10,000, maybe 50 were questionable. That's not nothing, but it's not as bad as the headlines make it sound. Has anyone else looked at raw numbers from their own job and found the reality less dramatic?

@murphy.tessa I get where you're coming from, but here's the thing nobody's talking about. A lot of those 50 "wrong" rejections were people who clearly lied or fudged numbers on their apps, the system just flagged them for the wrong reason. So it's not really 50 people getting screwed over unfairly.

But didn't you just say 50 out of 10,000 is still people getting unfairly rejected?

Wait are you saying 50 people being wrong is somehow acceptable?
