I spent $80 on a resume scanner that said I was a perfect fit, but the real hiring algorithm never even saw my application.

I mean, it's wild that a tool can promise fairness by checking keywords, but then a completely different system with its own hidden rules just filters you out before a human even looks, has anyone else had a company's public and private algorithms totally disagree on you?

a tool can promise fairness by checking keywords but then a completely different system with its own hidden rules just filters you out" - that line hit me hard because it's the whole problem right there. So here's what I'm wondering: did that scanner you used give any hint about what the actual system might look for, or was it just a total black box where you had to guess? @nguyen.angela's mention of that Wired article makes me think this is way more common than people realize, like these companies are basically running two different hiring games and we're only told about one of them. It's frustrating because you put all that work into matching one set of rules and then the real gatekeeper is this shadow algorithm that nobody talks about.

Read a Wired article on this exact bait-and-switch.

My old job's internal system filtered for a specific degree our public site never mentioned.
