My credit line got cut by an algorithm that only saw my zip code

Three days ago, my bank sent a notice saying they were lowering my credit limit from $8,000 to $500. I called, and the agent said it was an automatic review based on 'area risk factors.' I live in a neighborhood that's mostly renters, and the system flagged it as high risk without looking at my 10-year payment history. I feel like I'm being judged by my address instead of my actions. Has anyone fought a decision like this and gotten a real person to look at it?

But is a lower credit limit really the end of the world? You still have access to credit, just less of it. Maybe the system is overly cautious, but don't banks have to manage risk somehow? It's not like they closed your account completely.

My friend had his limit cut right before a big car repair. It messed up his whole budget because he couldn't spread the cost. It feels like the bank is punishing you for being careful.

Nancyjones misses the point. A lower limit right when you need it most turns a planned expense into a crisis. Banks call it risk management, but it just feels like pulling the rug out. Your friend budgeted around having that credit available, and the bank changed the rules without warning. That careful planning gets totally wrecked by a random limit cut.
