Overheard my bank's fraud bot calling me a liar, then it froze my card
Last Tuesday I tried to buy a $210 plane ticket for my mom in Phoenix and the card got blocked mid-checkout. When I called, the rep read me the algorithm's note saying my purchase pattern was 'inconsistent with stated travel plans'. I'd never flown there before, sure, but the bot didn't ask, it just assumed. Has anyone else had to fight a system that labels you suspicious without ever asking a human question first?
and honestly the part that gets me is how they frame it like the bot knows you. it doesn't know anything. it just saw a number pattern and decided you were lying about your own life. that's the real problem here. nobody questions the system when it makes a mistake, only when a human does. like the bot can't be wrong, it just "observed" something. but a human would have asked you why you were buying a ticket for Phoenix, maybe you have family there, maybe it's a gift, maybe you're moving. the bot doesn't care about reasons. it just flags and freezes. and then the rep reads you the note like it's proof of something. so now you're in the position of defending yourself to a machine that never even talked to you. that's backwards. the burden should be on them to explain why a normal purchase is suspicious, not on you to prove you're not a criminal. and the worst part is nobody even apologizes when it turns out they were wrong, they just unlock the card like it never happened.
