Update: I just used a fairness checklist on our hiring tool and caught a big issue.

Did you see that recent article on bias in hiring algorithms? It mentioned how common these flaws are, even in tools from big companies. Your experience shows why ongoing review is so important.

What if laws made companies face real penalties when their biased algorithms hurt people? Like, Amazon's old hiring tool that filtered out women's resumes got scrapped after bad press, but what actually changed there? I mean, without regular checks and real costs for getting it wrong, it's too easy for companies to just say sorry and keep using broken systems. Maybe we need rules that force them to show their work and prove the tools are fair over time.

How can we make companies actually do the reviews?

Yeah, that 'actually do the reviews' part is the whole problem. In my experience, companies treat required reviews like my old landlord treated safety inspections, doing the bare minimum just to check the box. They only start really checking their work when something breaks and there's a real cost for leaving it broken.
