Am I the only one who thinks those stick-on tile backsplashes are a total waste of $60

I put the peel and stick kind up behind my stove in my rental here in Columbus and half of them curled up by the second steam from my kettle. My landlord docked me $60 off the deposit for the glue residue, so that cheap fix cost me double. Did anyone get these to actually stay put, or is the real move just leaving the wall bare?
