My landlord charged me $75 for a missing blind, so I looked up the actual cost at Home Depot
I moved out of a 1 bedroom in Austin last spring and got hit with a $75 charge for one broken blind slat. I was mad, but when I checked Home Depot's site later that week, a whole new 2 inch faux wood blind for that same window size was $29.99. The kicker is my lease said normal wear and tear was allowed, but apparently a bent slat counts as damage. I started taking dated photos of every single thing when I moved into my current place, and I mean every outlet, every corner, every weird stain. Anyone else have a landlord charge that made you laugh when you found the real price online?
Ugh, that blind thing is so common it hurts. But honestly, a bent slat is damage, not normal wear and tear. Normal wear is like faded paint or carpet that's worn down from walking on it for years. If you physically bent the slat, that's on you, and landlords are allowed to charge for fixing stuff you broke. The $75 is still steep though, since they probably buy blinds in bulk for way less than Home Depot. So yeah, fight the markup, but don't act like a bent slat is just "living there.
